At the Schools Gates is a working progress project that explores the notion of childhood identity and boundaries. Children in the 21st century are constantly expected to conform to the pressure of school, the growing expectation to succeed and perform to meet government benchmarks. Along with the added pressure of peers, social media and technology, children are growing up fast. As a mother, I am concerned with our societies growing dependence on technologies and screens but also the need to conform and fit in. My work strives to capture the vulnerability of children at primary school age but also show the raw pleasure of youth, the freedom it can entail once restrictions and boundaries are removed.
